Counseling Connections & Associates is pleased to contract with Dumayi Gutierrez, Ph.D., PLMHP at our practice. Dumayi is currently accepting new clients by referral only.  


Dumayi Gutierrez is a Provisional Licensed Mental Health Practitioner with a specialization in Couple and Family Therapy. She has been working in the mental health field since 2014. Dumayi has worked with a variety of clients including adolescents, adults, couples, families and groups. She specializes in working with multicultural, Latinx and/or LGBTQ individuals, couples and families. Additionally, Dumayi has served as clinical coordinator and family therapist for a LGBTQ Counseling Clinic in Iowa and The Gender and Family Project in New York.

Dumayi uses a narrative, experiential and feminist stance with her clients, utilizing techniques of advocacy and empowerment. She believes each client has trails and triumphs that build their unique life story. Dumayi strives to nurture her client's true, authentic self and collaborates with them to move towards their goals.

Dumayi received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Sexuality from The University of Iowa. She went on to receive her Master of Arts Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mount Mercy University and her Ph.D. in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. Her dissertation research focused on minority stress and mental health outcomes of Latinx LGBTQ communities.

Dumayi is a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, National Council on Family Relations and the American Family Therapy Academy. Dumayi serves as a Marriage and Family Therapy Adjunct Professor for Mercy College and is an AAMFT Supervisor Candidate.
